COURSE ASSESSMENT

This course is marked through a process of continuous assessment guided by your tutor following NCFE guidelines. This means that your qualification will be awarded according to your performance on assessments rather than by taking an exam.

We send the full course out with the units listed above, you then read through the course in your own time and complete the assignments which you send to your tutor for marking. There is no word count for these assignments. However, one sentence answers will be rejected and you will have to re-submit it for marking.

Upon verification of the activities, exercises and assignments, a certificate of achievement will be awarded by the national awarding organisation NCFE, as confirmation that your written work has met all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the programme.

We recommended you spend approximately 200 hours of your time studying for the Early Learning & Childcare Course. The pace of study is completely up to you. To give an example, if you dedicate 4 hours a week to the course it would take you a year to complete but if you could spare 8 hours a week you could complete it in six months.

You have the freedom to start the course at any time and continue your studies at your own pace for a period of up to 12 months from initial registration with full tutor support.

Early Learning & Childcare Diploma
NCFE Level 3 on the new QCF

From September 2010 two significant changes to qualifications for people working (or planning to work) in the Child Care sector have taken place. These are to be fully implemented from January 2011 and are:

1. The introduction of a new national qualifications system called Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF) which provides for a credit based system of qualification accreditation where student will study units of learning and obtain credits for them towards nationally recognised qualifications.
2. The introduction of new qualifications for the child care sector, overseen by the Sector Skills Council .

The new QCF, referred to above, incorporates the principle of Recognition of Prior Learning whereby students can claim credit or exemption for prior learning and on completion of this course you will be provided with a detailed statement of the units and learning outcomes achieved. This will then enable you to request credit or exemption for elements of the qualification required to practice in the sector.

The new QCF qualification being introduced is the Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce (Early Learning & Child Care pathway). This is based upon achieving a minimum of 65 credits drawn from a range of mandatory and optional units. This distance learning programme is fully mapped to the new qualification, and provides knowledge and understanding by way of 12 assessment study unit’s equivalent to 38 credits.

This course has been designed to meet specific learner requirements. Accreditation by NCFE is a guarantee of quality. It means that this learning programme has been scrutinised and approved by an independent panel of experienced educational professionals and is quality audited by NCFE.

Childminder

Childminders work in their own homes, looking after children whose parents are at work or studying. This could be throughout the day with babies and children under five, or after school and in the school holidays with older children. As a childminder you would: make sure that the children in your care feel secure and are safe, warm and well-fed plan, prepare and serve meals change nappies and make up bottles for babies help children to develop by providing a range of play activities, both indoors and outside take children on outings, for example to the park or to toddler groups take older children to and from playgroup or school. You would need to respect parents' wishes about their children's diet, routines and religion, and share information about the children with their parents.
